Self-adhesive vinyl is the most widely used material in the sign trade, for both printed graphics and cut lettering. It comes as white and clear films for printing, and in a wide range of coloured vinyls for cutting.
The main difference between vinyls is how the film is made. Monomeric calendered vinyl is the economical choice for short-term, flat graphics. Polymeric calendered vinyl lasts longer and handles gentle curves. Cast vinyl is the premium option for vehicle wraps and complex shapes, conforming over rivets and recesses and lasting for years outdoors.
The adhesive matters as much as the film. Permanent, removable and repositionable adhesives suit different jobs, air-release channels make bubble-free application easier, and grey or black backed films stop what is underneath from showing through. Specialist films cover one-way vision window graphics, frosted and etched effects, reflective vinyl and films designed for textured walls.
When choosing vinyl, match it to your printer and ink, how long the graphic needs to last and the surface it is going on, whether flat, curved or textured. Check whether it needs to come off cleanly later, and pair it with the right laminate. Ask for samples before committing to a large job.
