William Smith Group 1832

William Smith Group is a leading UK trade supplier of sign materials and manufacturing services with nearly 200 years of experience.

William Smith Group is a leading trade supplier to the sign and graphics industry with a history dating back to 1832.

William Smith is one of the UK’s largest trade suppliers of self-adhesive vinyl film to the sign, graphics and building interiors industries. The name goes back a long way. The company started life in 1832 building horse-drawn street sweepers, and worked its way through snow ploughs and tar sprayers before settling into signs and graphics, which gives it over 190 years of family-run heritage and a sign-making pedigree the group bills as the oldest in the UK. It runs today from Barnard Castle in County Durham.

The wider business trades as William Smith Group 1832 and splits into three divisions. William Smith handles distribution, holding thousands of materials in full, part and custom-slit rolls from brands including 3M, Avery Dennison, Arlon, Contra Vision, Cover Styl’ and R-Tape, alongside its own VION range of print, window and architectural films. Smith is the trade-only sign-making arm, and Architextural covers decorative surface and building-interior films, one of the faster-growing corners of the trade. Materials, tools and application kit run from vehicle wraps and fleet liveries to window films, floor graphics and Chapter 8 chevron kits, with next-day delivery on orders placed before 6pm.

Learning is part of the offer. The William Smith Group 1832 Academy runs in-person and online courses covering vehicle wrapping, architectural film and more, aimed at raising installer standards and opening up new work. As a FESPA UK waste accreditation champion, it helps customers cut landfill and recover cost through smarter waste management, and it was named one of The Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2026.

For sign makers, wrappers and interior specialists who want premium brands, deep stock and a supplier that has seen a few things since 1832, William Smith is a name the trade keeps coming back to.
