Paint protection film, often called PPF, is a tough, clear or coloured film applied over a vehicle’s paintwork to guard it against stone chips, scratches, bird droppings and road grime. It has grown from a specialist car detailing service into a valuable sideline for many wrap installers.
Most PPF is made from thermoplastic polyurethane, which is thicker and more resistant than wrap vinyl. Many films have a self-healing top coat, so light scratches disappear with heat. Films come in gloss and matt finishes, and coloured PPF combines a colour change with paint protection. Pre-cut kits for popular models make installation quicker and reduce cutting on the vehicle.
When choosing PPF, look at the film’s thickness, clarity, self-healing performance and resistance to yellowing, and the length and terms of the warranty. Installation is demanding, so check what training, cutting software and pattern libraries the supplier offers.
