Vinyl cutters, also called cutting plotters, use a small blade to cut shapes and lettering from roll vinyl. They cut through the film but not the backing paper, so the waste can be weeded away and the design applied with transfer tape. They are used for sign lettering, vehicle and window graphics, stickers and heat transfer vinyl for garments.
Many work alongside a printer, reading registration marks to contour cut printed graphics accurately. Print-and-cut machines combine both jobs in one.
When comparing machines, look at cutting width, how much downforce it has for thicker films such as reflective or sandblast mask, the accuracy of its optical registration for printed work and whether it works with the design software you already use.
