UK sign maker Astley continues its partnership with Gateshead Council, having recently completed two projects that celebrate the town’s rich heritage, inspire community pride, and support regeneration through local design and manufacturing.

As a business with its roots firmly planted in the North East, Astley recently supported the local council with the Railway Quarter placemaking signage and Maidens Walk hoarding artwork. Both projects were designed, manufactured, and installed entirely from Astley’s Gateshead facility, reinforcing the company’s commitment to being a 100% UK manufacturer and champion of local recruitment and economic growth.

The Gateshead Railway Quarter has been reimagined as a creative destination and is home to a growing hub of independent businesses. Astley developed signage that honours the area’s industrial character while enhancing visibility and footfall as part of a broader UKSPF-funded initiative to invigorate the local economy.

Nearby on Maidens Walk, Astley brought to life 150 metres of vibrant student artwork as part of the “Gateshead Local Places and Heroes” campaign. Working with first-year arts students from Gateshead College, the project not only beautifies the area near the Quayside but also helps deter graffiti and celebrate local culture through public art.

These initiatives have already attracted positive attention, including recognition from Gateshead MP Mark Ferguson, who praised the work via LinkedIn; “So much positive feedback about Gateshead’s Railway Quarter. Great to see this part of our town being celebrated, and fantastic local signage by Astley too!”

Astley’s collaboration with Gateshead Council forms part of a wider portfolio of local work that includes the rebrand of The Glasshouse International Centre for Music and ongoing support for the Great North Run, where Astley manufactures, installs, and maintains the Tyne Bridge sign each year.

“We are immensely proud to support our local authority and community with solutions that not only elevate public spaces but are also delivered by local people, for local benefit,” said Philip Dawson, New Business Sales Manager at Astley. “As a UK manufacturer based in Gateshead, we remain committed to investing in regional talent and helping shape the future of our town.”
