Canon and Plockmatic introduce next-gen inline booklet makers

Canon launches the BLM435e and BLM450e Plockmatic booklet makers, featuring A4 landscape support and DFD+ automation for imagePRESS V-series presses.

Canon has introduced the BLM435e and BLM450e, the latest generation of inline booklet-making solutions developed in partnership with Plockmatic. Replacing the established BLM35 and BLM50 series, the new models are designed for use with Canon’s imagePRESS V-series and varioPRINT 140 QUARTZ monochrome presses, offering significant upgrades in automation, connectivity, and application versatility.

A primary feature of the new series is the support for sheet sizes up to 660mm in length, which enables the production of A4 landscape format booklets alongside standard portrait formats. The BLM450e is capable of stapling and folding up to 50 sheets of 80gsm paper (creating 200-page booklets), while the BLM435e handles up to 35 sheets for 140-page booklets. Both models produce Plockmatic’s signature square-folded finish, giving documents the professional appearance of a perfect-bound book.

Automation is a core focus of the update, driven by the new DFD+ interface. This bridge creates a deeper integration between the Canon press and the booklet maker, allowing for automatic paper size detection. The booklet maker receives dimensions directly from the print engine and adjusts its settings automatically. This allows operators to run multiple jobs of varying sizes without manual intervention, a task that previously required manual input at the finishing user interface.

The DFD+ interface also introduces a “dynamic set gap” feature. This allows the booklet maker to communicate with the press the instant a set has been processed, triggering the next set to begin printing immediately. This reduces the dwell time between jobs and increases overall hourly productivity.

For added precision, the units feature a 7-inch touchscreen and new adjustable skew compensation to ensure accurate folding. Optional modules are also available, including the FM400e for face trimming and the RCT (Rotate Crease Trim) module, which provides full-bleed trimming and creasing for smaller sheet sizes.

The BLM435e and BLM450e are compatible with the imagePRESS V1350, V1000, and V900 colour systems, as well as the varioPRINT 140 QUARTZ series. These devices are intended for low to mid-volume production environments with an average monthly volume of approximately 30,000 booklets.

By strengthening its collaboration with Plockmatic, Canon continues to expand the end-to-end automation capabilities available to print service providers. The BLM435e and BLM450e will be available through Canon sales offices and accredited partners starting in Q2 2026.
