The BSGA announces the public consultation for the draft BS 559-2 standard, covering the inspection and maintenance of interior and exterior signs.
The British Sign and Graphics Association (BSGA) has announced the release of the draft BS 559-2 standard for public consultation. Titled “Interior and exterior signs – Part 2: Inspection and maintenance – Specification”, the document represents a significant development in standardising the operational lifecycle of commercial signage assets across the United Kingdom.
The new standard focuses specifically on the inspection, compliance maintenance, and ongoing management of both interior and exterior signs. It has been designed to establish greater consistency across the trade, define clear commercial responsibilities for building management, and improve public safety outcomes regarding long-term asset degradation. While the existing BS 559-1 handles the initial specification, design, and physical installation of signs, this new second part addresses what happens after a sign is erected to ensure structures remain secure and electronically safe over many years.
Technical representatives from the BSGA have contributed to the drafting process over several months to ensure the final guidance aligns with modern manufacturing realities and practical field applications. The public consultation phase allows a broad range of industry stakeholders to review the draft and submit critical amendments before the text is formalised. The association is urging sign makers, structural installers, architects, local authorities, facilities managers, and commercial building owners to participate, as these groups are often legally responsible for property maintenance and public liability.
David Derbyshire, BSGA Technical Chair and Chair of the committee responsible for developing the standard, said, ‘Standards are most effective when they reflect the realities of how an industry operates. BS 559-2 has been developed with practical application in mind, helping to support safer outcomes, clearer responsibilities and improved long-term management of sign assets’.
The BSGA has confirmed it will provide comprehensive guidance documents, technical briefings, and compliance resources to its members once the standard is officially published. This ongoing support is intended to help sign companies understand the updated recommendations and integrate them into their maintenance contracts with clients.
The draft document can be accessed via the BSI Standards Development Portal under project number 2025-01518. The public consultation period will remain open until 19 August 2026, and the BSGA is encouraging the wider signage community to register on the portal and log their feedback before the deadline.
