Roland DG introduces the VersaStudio BY2-20, a compact desktop Direct-to-Film printer featuring automated white ink circulation
Roland DG has announced the global launch of the VersaStudio BY2-20, a compact desktop Direct-to-Film (DTF) printer aimed at small-scale apparel decoration and garment personalisation workflows. Released on 24 June 2026, the CMYK plus white system enters a rapidly expanding garment customisation market, positioning itself as a reliable alternative to low-cost, unbranded hardware solutions that often compromise on long-term mechanical stability.
The desktop-sized device is engineered to provide commercial textile printers and independent makers with a predictable platform for on-demand garment production. To address the nozzle clogging and sedimentation issues frequently associated with dense white DTF inks, the BY2-20 incorporates a refined internal ink-flow loop, constant automated temperature controls, and large-capacity ink cartridges. The machine also features automated white underbase generation, simplifying pre-press file setup for operators working with dark fabrics such as sportswear, corporate workwear, and heavy cotton t-shirts.
Roland DG has bundled the printer into a unified software system to lower the technical barrier to entry for small business owners and companies new to the DTF process. The production workflow relies on Connect Designer for initial artwork generation, moving into VersaWorks 7 for file preparation and ripping, whilst utilising the cloud-based Roland DG Connect application for remote machine monitoring and preventive maintenance tracking. This end-to-end integration is designed to reduce the need for manual technical intervention, allowing apparel brands to focus on order fulfilment rather than hardware management.
Beyond standard digital garment transfers, the BY2-20 retains standalone contour vinyl cutting capabilities. This hybrid configuration allows users to process traditional heat-transfer vinyl graphics on the same device, giving shops the ability to combine standard DTF prints with speciality vinyl finishes such as metallic, glitter, and holographic textures. Additionally, the system utilises OEKO-TEX Eco Passport certified S-PG2 inks and matching S-Powder hot-melt adhesives, ensuring compliance with international ecological and skin-safety standards for clothing manufacturing.
