Skandacor highlights digital embellishment for holiday cards

Skandacor has demonstrated how print providers can use digital finishing, lamination, and embellishments to create four distinct holiday cards from a single design concept.

Skandacor has highlighted how print providers can create multiple unique products from a single design by simply experimenting with different cut shapes, layouts, and embellishments such as UV and foil.

Skandacor created four unique Thanksgiving-inspired cards from a single design using digital finishing.

To showcase what is possible, Skandacor created four Thanksgiving-inspired cards using the same overall design theme, which featured seasonal colours, typography, photography, and pumpkin graphics. From this starting point, the artwork was adapted into several different formats. One card uses a more traditional shape with rounded corners, while another extends the design with pumpkin-shaped elements. A third version follows the contour of a pumpkin entirely, and a taller format shows how the same theme can be reworked into a different style of card. Although the pieces are connected by the same design, each one becomes a completely different finished product.

The four cards were produced using the same basic workflow, with each stage adding another element to the finished piece. The process begins with the CMYK artwork, which is then laminated with SOFTpro to give the finished piece a soft-touch surface while preparing it for additional finishing. Next, the sheet is overprinted with a 100K layer alongside die cutter and UV printer registration marks. This 100K layer identifies the areas that will receive SLEEKING embellishments.

The sheets then move to the LAMpro Cheetah S15, where digital foil is applied to selected areas of the design to highlight text, borders, or graphics. Following this, the FINISHpro 3D adds raised UV resin to selected parts of the design, creating dimension and texture that help details stand out.

The final step is digital die cutting. Because the cut path is digital, print providers have the flexibility to design the cut line around the artwork itself rather than working only within standard square or rectangular formats. This path can also be changed from one job to the next without creating a new physical die each time, making it ideal for short runs, seasonal work, and prototypes.

Skandacor notes that this flexible approach can be applied to much more than holiday cards, giving print providers the ability to create invitations, shaped business cards, gift tags, menus, packaging inserts, and promotional pieces in-house without needing a separate production setup for every product.
