Epson unveils CONTOURJET for direct-to-shape 3D printing

Epson has introduced CONTOURJET, combining PrecisionCore printheads with industrial six-axis robotics for direct-to-shape 3D decoration.

Epson has introduced CONTOURJET, a new direct-to-shape printing system which combines Epson’s inkjet technology with its robotics technology. Developed to decorate complex three-dimensional items across the sports equipment, automotive components, and industrial manufacturing sectors, the total solution encompasses hardware, specialised inks, workflow software, implementation support, and ongoing maintenance services.

At the heart of the hardware platform sits a compact PrecisionCore S800 printhead delivering 600 x 600 dpi resolution, mounted onto an Epson six-axis industrial robot with an independent vertical lifting mechanism. Proprietary trajectory control algorithms and real-time image processing ensure precise ink deposition over curved, grooved, or irregular geometries. Recent mechanical upgrades introduce linear motor drives and higher payload capacities to accommodate larger and longer workpieces, supported by a front-access cabinet design for faster routine maintenance.

Replacing conventional analogue decoration with digital direct-to-shape technology eliminates screen frames, printing plates, and time-consuming manual setups. The system’s fluid architecture supports CMYK, white ink, and clear varnish, enabling operators to apply opaque base coats, protective finishes, and tactile textured effects across short-run or bespoke production orders.

Beyond creative versatility, direct inkjet deposition applies ink exclusively where needed on the workpiece. This targeted application significantly lowers material consumption, chemical waste, and floor space requirements compared to traditional pad or screen printing lines, helping manufacturers meet strict environmental targets.

Substrate evaluation and application development are managed through the vendor’s Inkjet Innovation Lab Fujimi in Nagano, Japan, alongside the European Experience Centre in Neuss, Germany. Technical specialists at both facilities work directly with brand owners and ink partners to calibrate jetting parameters for specific industrial substrates, supporting global expansion into high-value 3D decoration markets.

Epson is presenting sample applications produced on the CONTOURJET platform on its booth at PRINTING United Expo 2026 in Las Vegas from 23 to 25 September.
