Canon launches Colorado M-Traffic for traffic signage production

Canon introduces 1.6m roll-to-roll printer featuring new UVgel 540-R inks designed to meet stringent global safety regulations for reflective traffic signage

Canon has introduced the Colorado M-Traffic printer, a specialised 1.6m roll-to-roll system engineered for the production of both regulated and non-regulated traffic signage. The system utilises Canon’s proprietary UVgel technology to deliver the durability and colour precision required for road safety applications.

The printer is equipped with the newly developed UVgel 540-R ink set. These inks are formulated to meet international performance standards for traffic signage, enabling the accurate reproduction of seven key regulatory colours using a standard CMYK configuration. A significant technical benefit of the UVgel platform is its low-temperature curing process, which ensures the dimensional stability of heat-sensitive reflective media while allowing for immediate lamination after printing.

A central component of the new offering is its compatibility with the 3M MCS Warranty for Traffic. When utilised with designated 3M reflective media and SAi FlexiCOMPLETE 3M Traffic Edition software, the Colorado M-Traffic provides a certified, standards-aligned workflow. While Canon supplies the hardware and ink, the warranty is authorised by 3M, ensuring that finished signs meet the rigorous longevity and reflectivity requirements of the industry.

In terms of production capacity, the Colorado M-Traffic is designed for high-volume environments. In its dedicated ‘traffic-signage mode’, the system can produce up to 15.3 square metres per hour. It is capable of processing two 50m rolls during a single shift, with the additional capacity for unattended overnight operation. Integrated features such as nozzle diagnostics and fast roll-switching are included to support reliable performance during long-run production.

Environmental and operational efficiency also feature prominently in the new release. The UVgel process produces no ozone emissions and zero VOCs under Canon’s defined test conditions. Additionally, the printer’s energy-efficient operation is designed to help service providers reduce overhead costs while supporting sustainability targets.

Duncan Smith, Country Director, Production at Canon UK & Ireland, said, “The introduction of the Colorado M-Traffic offers signage makers a unique workflow, which brings ease of use and proven technology benefits. Through compatibility with 3M and SAi FlexiCOMPLETE 3M Traffic Edition software, this printer enables sign makers across EMEA to confidently deliver high quality, cost efficient, sustainable and highly productive output which helps improve traffic signage visibility.”

The Colorado M-Traffic will receive its first European public demonstration at Intertraffic Amsterdam, taking place from 10–13 March 2026, where it will be showcased on the 3M stand.
