Large format graphics turns Soho Streets into a permanent interchangeable art gallery

PVC-free Kavalan Sunlight Weldable banner material available exclusively from CMYUK is the material of choice for a permanent outdoor gallery space around The Photographers’ Gallery in Soho, London.

The latest outdoor exhibition to be staged features the work of contemporary photographer Gideon Mendel. Entitled Fire and Flood, over 200m2 of photographic images were digitally printed onto Kavalan Sunlight Weldable banner material.  They were installed along several alleys, streets, and on the façade of the building opposite the Gallery itself.

“Once again PVC-free Kavalan has demonstrated that it is an industry disruptor and bone fide game-changer,” said Damien Clarke, Sales Director (materials) CMYUK.

“The use of PVC-free Kavalan underpins this exhibition with a sustainable narrative. Sunlight Weldable is strong and can withstand environmental stresses. It comes in roll widths of up to 5m to provide a seamless aesthetic that elevates the overall creative appeal of the imagery. The photography is stunning, and I understand that the photographer was very happy with the quality of the output.”

The printing and installation for this space was carried out by MacroArt, which was appointed for this iconic project by place-making and events specialist Field and Lawn.

In addition to the large-scale graphics, MacroArt’s Senior Project Manager, Andrew Conway and his team devised a bespoke free-standing 45m x 4.5m frame structure that covered the façade of the building opposite the Gallery.

Standing proud, it provides a central reusable unobtrusive display solution for the work, whilst accommodating venting, service electrics, and lighting.

Rebecca Crofton, Senior Project Manager at Field & Lawn said, “The results speak for themselves.  The Photographers’ Gallery and the surrounding streets are the perfect space to showcase free displays for the public in a highly impactful and visual way.”
