Durst launches P5 SMP

The new Super Multi-Pass system is designed to bridge the gap between conventional multi-pass and single-pass technology with a capacity of five million square metres annually.

Durst P5 SMP hybrid Super Multi-Pass printer designed for high-volume board and roll production

Durst Group unveiled the brand-new P5 SMP (Super Multi-Pass) at its production site in Lienz, Austria, in early November 2025. The launch event included demonstrations of the system, which Durst positions as an alternative to UV single-pass technology.

According to the manufacturer, the P5 SMP is designed to bridge the gap between conventional multi-pass and single-pass technology. The system features a hybrid architecture supporting both board and roll printing, enabling multitrack operation and full automation. Durst reports that the machine fits within a footprint of 15 metres, including automation components.

Technical specifications for the P5 SMP include a maximum printing width of 3.5 metres and a maximum production speed of 1,940 m²/h. The system is equipped with 10 colour channels and 30 print heads per channel, offering an annual production capacity of five million square metres. Energy consumption is rated at 35 kW using LED curing technology.

Key features highlighted by Durst include an “Automated Corrugated System” for precise edge control and reliable media transport, alongside “Digital Substrate Alignment” (DSA) which offers ±0.25 mm registration accuracy. The system does not require primer, roller coater, or drying systems.

The new printing solution has undergone a field test at ARIAN GmbH in Austria. Durst states that during the test period, ARIAN produced 200,000 m² across various materials. Robert Posch, CPO of ARIAN, commented that they “found a very good machine in the P5 SMP to close the gap between conventional multipass and UV single pass technology.”

The launch event also featured a discussion with Christoph Gamper, CEO and Co-Owner of Durst Group, Robert Posch, and Nathan Safran of NAPCO/Printing United Alliance, covering topics such as automation and the role of software in the print industry.
